Events 2019
On 19-21 June 2019 the Kick-off meeting of the H2020 project EXCALIBUR was held. The project, fully titled “Exploiting the multifunctional potential of belowground biodiversity in horticultural farming” is financed by the European Commission and it will be implemented from 1st of June 2019 to 31st of May 2024. The meeting was organised by CREA, who is also the project coordinator, and gathered 16 partners from 11 countries in Europe. The partners got the chance to meet each other, discussed organisational, financial and administrative matters and elaborate a strategy for the implementation of the project. The first day of the meeting was as well open for attendance from stakeholders, and the partners had the chance to welcome farmers, researchers and producers.
Within the framework of the European Biotech Week, ENEA will organize a conference on ‘The Microbiome at the heart of sustainable food production’. The event will dedicate special part of the programme to H2020 projects related to sustainable food production, as well to SMEs experience in H2020. Dr. Stefano Mocali, EXCALIBUR Coordinator, will take part by presenting the project during the conference.

THE LEADER OF THE PROJECT ORGANISES AN OPENING CONFERENCE IN OCTOBER IN ROME
Almost four months have passed since the official start of Excalibur project and all 16 partners have been preparing actively for executing the project in the best possible way. As part of the preparation process, the leader of the project CREA invites interested Italian stakeholders at a conference to present the project and collect ideas on project’s implementation. The conference will take place in Rome on 28th October 2019.

On the first day of the festival, at the main scene of “XXII Fair of Gardening and Agriculture”, Dr Małgorzata Tartanus (PhD) introduced EXCALIBUR, its objectives and assumptions, and the major activities foreseen within the project. She gave a presentation titled “Improvement of biodiversity and pest management in fruit production” to the public. The participants expressed interest in the subjects, asking numerous questions, particularly on the use of microbial-based fertilizers and pesticides, and took part in the following conversation at the project’s stand.

Dr Anne D. Jungblut showcased microbiome research and the importance of underground biodiversity for food security as part of the European Researchers’ Night at the Natural History Museum, London, United Kingdom on the 27 September 2019.
The Natural History Museum was part of the European Researchers’ Night. The theme of the night was “World Wild Webs: Our interconnected planet”, where 150 scientists shared and discussed with the public topics ranging from networks in nature, sustainable solutions to today’s environmental issues, how digital technologies give us access to the latest research and how delving into the past is key to protecting the future of our planet.

Last week, on 16 October, Excalibur was presented at the scientific conference “Protection of soil biodiversity as the necessity for health of present and future generations”. The event took place at the Research Institute of Horticulture in Skierniewice, Poland. The event gathered over 100 participants from all regions of Poland and it was a great opportunity to reach interested stakeholders.

The seminar is organized on the occasion of World Soil Day and interested stakeholders are invited to attend it on 5th December at Campus of Sapienza University in Rome.
